Engineering Systems - Elective Courses

Students must select their elective courses from the appropriate list below, in a manner according to the instructions that follow. Any courses that do not appear on this list, or any combination of courses that do appear on this list but that do not meet the stated requirements are not considered eligible and cannot be used on a program plan.

In most cases, students should not take more than one course with a particular prefix, i.e. “MTH” (with the exception being courses with the “SYS” prefix – multiple courses having this prefix can be selected). However, there may be special cases where a student planning a career in a particular field might wish to take a grouping of courses constituting a concentration in a topic area related to that field. In such cases it may be impossible to find a sufficient number of courses with different prefixes to comprise the concentration. In the event that such a situation is present a student may, with the approval of the student’s designated advisor and the department head, take up to three courses having the same prefix. To qualify, the grouping of courses having the same prefix must each bear a recognizable relationship to a given topic area (and not simply be two or three courses sharing the same prefix), and there must be no other courses having different prefixes that could be used to comprise the concentration.

In all cases, students must consult with their designated advisor prior to completing a program plan containing their selection of elective courses.
