Overview
Lasers are devices that produce an intense, coherent beam of energy. The most familiar types of lasers are those that emit a beam of visible, monochromatic light, but depending on the frequency of the energy, lasers can also produce focused rays in the infrared or x-ray spectrum. Some of the engineering applications for these devices include fluid flow diagnostics, laser welding, medical procedures, and micropropulsion. As research progresses, lasers will continue to have a broad range of use in the laboratory, in industry, and in our homes.
