The Link Foundation Fellowships
for doctoral research in
Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation

Guidelines for Applicants

1. The applicant must be a full-time student in an established Ph.D. program at an academic institution in the United States or Canada. The applicant must be admitted to candidacy and ready to start work on doctoral research on or before the project commencement date.

2. The application must contain (see details below): Cover Page; Description of Project; Letters of Endorsement; Letters of Recommendation; Objectives, Timeline, and Budget Summary; Current Resume.
3. The award consists of a grant of $25,000. The student will be awarded a stipend of $21,500 for the fellowship year; $2,500 for authorized expenses associated with the research (supplies, small equipment, computing charge, etc.); and $1,000 publication costs for research results. Excluded charges: labor/salary of staff, and pooled or overhead charges. The proposal must include detail for the expenditure of the $25,000.

4. The successful applicants will be required to submit a written research report documenting the work carried out during the fellowship year, which is due by September.

Proposal Instructions
(Please submit original typescript using Times New Roman 12 point font throughout):
1. The cover sheet including your name, institution, the title of the proposed work, and the name and title of your principal advisor.
2. A 500-word description of the project that places your research in the context of current activities in ocean engineering and instrumentation. The project description is not to exceed three pages including text, figures, and references.
3. Letters of endorsement from your academic supervisor and from your Dean on university stationary. One of these letters must verify that institutional research facilities are adequate for the project, and that you are working towards a degree full-time in an established Ph.D. program at an academic institution in the United States or Canada.
4. Two additional letters of reference (professional or educational).

5. Project objectives, timeline, and projected budget for use of the fellowship in accordance with Link Foundation guidelines (above), not to exceed one page.
6. A current resume not to exceed two pages in length.
