Financial Aid Opportunities

Fall 2008/Spring 2009-Full-Time Students

University-Based Financial Aid:

  1. Merit-Based Scholarships: for First-Time Freshmen Students only.
  2. Specialty Scholarships: combined with Merit Scholarships.
    1. NCSSSMST-student must attend and graduate from a member school in the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools in Math, Science and Technology (NCSSSMST). Indicated on application.
    2. FIRST Robotics-Students must be a member of their FIRST Robotics team during their senior year in high school. Student must provide proof of membership by a verification letter from their FIRST Robotics adviser.
  3. Transfer Scholarships: for transfer students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and have completed 30 semester hours of college work.
  4. Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Scholarships-for transfer students, replaces the Transfer Scholarship if they are a member of PTK in community college (3.5 or higher GPA and proof of membership required). Transfer students cannot get both scholarships (Transfer or PTK).
  5. Army ROTC scholarships-full tuition, room and board (excludes flight fees for flight students). Must apply through ROTC. Must be academically, medically and physically qualified. Army pays 100% of tuition. Florida Tech pays grant that covers basic room and board costs. Freshmen and Transfers are eligible to apply.
  6. Grants: various amounts. Combined with Merit-Based Scholarships.
    1. Visit Grant-Awarded to students who visit prior to enrollment. One time only grant given during their first year of full-time attendance.
    2. Alumni Endorsement Grant-An alumnus must submit an endorsement grant form on behalf of the student prior to January 15, 2008. After that date, the form must accompany the application.
    3. FAFSA Early Filer Grant-Students must submit the FAFSA and list Florida Tech on the form with our federal code (001469) prior to March 1, 2008.
    4. Florida Tech Legacy Grant-For sons and daughters of Florida Tech alumni enrolling full time.
    5. Florida Tech "Keep it in the family" Grant-For sisters and brothers of currently enrolled students. They both get it as long as they are both enrolled full time.
    6. Florida Tech Grant-Based on financial need of the family. Student must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Amounts are determined based on financial need and overall financial aid package of the student-done by the Financial Aid Office.

Florida State Aid: Combined with university scholarships and grants.

  1. Bright Futures Scholarships:
    1. Academic Scholars-$4,000 per year. Must graduate from a Florida high school and be Bright Futures qualified (3.5 GPA, SAT1 (Math/CR) = 1270 or higher).
    2. Medallion Scholars-$2,500 per year. Must graduate from a Florida high school and be Bright Futures qualified (3.0 GPA, SAT1 (Math/CR) = 970 or higher).
  2. Florida State Grants:
    1. Florida Resident Access Grant (FRAG)-$3,000 per year. May change. Determined by the state legislature every year. Requirements are to be a Florida resident (at least 12 months) and attend a private university within the state.
    2. Florida Student Assistance Grant (FSAG)-$1,500 per year. Based on financial need. For Florida residents.
  3. Florida Pre-Paid Program. Accumulated funds may be applied toward a student's costs at Florida Tech. Students cannot lock into a tuition rate at Florida Tech.

Federal Financial Aid: Combined with university and Florida state aid.

  1. Federal Grants:
    1. Pell Grants-up to $4,050 per year. Based on financial need. Student must file a FAFSA.
    2. Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)-$1,200 per year. Based on financial need. Student must file a FAFSA.
    3. Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)-$750 (first-year students), $1,300 (second-year students). Students must file the FAFSA and be Pell Grant eligible (based on financial need).
    4. Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant-$4,000 per year for college juniors and seniors only. Must file the FAFSA. Must be Pell Grant eligible (based on financial need). Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Only for select majors-see Office of Financial Aid for majors.
  2. Federal Student Loans:
    1. Stafford Loan-$3,500 (freshman year), $4,500 (sophomore year), $5,500 (each year for junior and senior year). Student must file a FAFSA. If they show a financial need, the loans are subsidized. If they do not have financial need, the loans are unsubsidized.
    2. Perkins Loan-$1,200 per year. Based on financial need. Student must file the FAFSA.
  3. Parent Loans (PLUS)-up to full cost of college attendance. Usually full cost of attendance minus all other financial aid a student has received. Loan is given to the parents of the student.
  4. Work-Study-$1,500 per year. Money not given up front. Student receives a paycheck every two weeks.
