MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Florida Institute of Technology Department of Civil Engineering announces a new endowment, the Civil Alumni Recruitment Endowment (CARE). The endowment, which so far totals $29,000, will be used to fund undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships.

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Jean-Paul Pinelli, professor of civil engineering at Florida Institute of Technology, is refining a model to evaluate the benefit and cost of hurricane mitigation measures being implemented in the state of Florida. To continue this work he has received a $130,000 grant from the state of Florida’s Center of Excellence on Hurricane Mitigation.

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Florida Institute of Technology student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Concrete Canoe team has placed third overall at the 2009 ASCE Southeast Student Conference in Nashville, Tenn. The regional contest consisted of 14 civil engineering events, including Steel Bridge, Surveying, and Professional Paper competitions.

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Florida Tech research team of Edward Kalajian, Ph.D., and Paul Cosentino, Ph.D., received a $150,000, 18-month research contract from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). These faculty members, with graduate student assistance, will develop methods to identify soil types where contractors may encounter problems installing large-diameter concrete pilings.
