Florida Tech Announces New Endowment for Civil Engineering Undergraduates

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Florida Institute of Technology Department of Civil Engineering announces a new endowment, the Civil Alumni Recruitment Endowment (CARE). The endowment, which so far totals $29,000, will be used to fund undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships.

State Grant Funds Florida Tech Hurricane Mitigation Studies

MELBOURNE, FLA. — Jean-Paul Pinelli, professor of civil engineering at Florida Institute of Technology, is refining a model to evaluate the benefit and cost of hurricane mitigation measures being implemented in the state of Florida. To continue this work he has received a $130,000 grant from the state of Florida’s Center of Excellence on Hurricane Mitigation.

Florida Tech Wins Third Overall at 2009 Civil Engineering Regional Competition

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Florida Institute of Technology student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Concrete Canoe team has placed third overall at the 2009 ASCE Southeast Student Conference in Nashville, Tenn. The regional contest consisted of 14 civil engineering events, including Steel Bridge, Surveying, and Professional Paper competitions.

Graduate Student Earns First Scholarship Awarded by Construction Writers Association

Civil Engineering Researchers Receive $150,000 Contract

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Florida Tech research team of Edward Kalajian, Ph.D., and Paul Cosentino, Ph.D., received a $150,000, 18-month research contract from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). These faculty members, with graduate student assistance, will develop methods to identify soil types where contractors may encounter problems installing large-diameter concrete pilings.

Concrete Canoe Team Qualifies for National Contest

MELBOURNE, FLA. — The Florida Institute of Technology student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) concrete canoe team has qualified for the 21st Annual 2008 National Concrete Canoe Competition. It will be held at Ècole de Technologie Supèrieure in Montreal, Canada, June 19-21.

Brevard Residents Named Outstanding Junior and Senior

They were chosen by a faculty committee from among the Outstanding Junior and Senior awardees within each academic area.

Florida Tech Engineering Students and General Lee Place Second at Knoxville Competition

MELBOURNE, Fla.—A Florida Tech student team and their 2007 concrete canoe placed second in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Southeast Regional Competition’s concrete canoe event. About 800 students, representing nearly 30 universities from Florida, Puerto Rico, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, attended the three-day competition.
