Professional Experience

During the 1980s he worked as a practicing civil engineer with TECHINT in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was involved in project management of large industrial projects and the design of steel structures. He also participated in the development of an Engineering Integrated System. During the early 1990s while at Georgia Tech he studied the utilization of nonstructural elements like precast facade cladding for the passive control of seismic response of buildings. This research resulted in the formulation of an energy-based design criterion, expressed as an optimization procedure for the use of energy dissipating facade cladding. Before joining Florida Tech, Dr. Pinelli worked in California in seismic risk evaluation. Since joining Florida Tech in 1995, he has been involved in research related to the strength of anchors in high-strength concrete, the study of break-away connections of highway signs under the action of wind and traffic, tornado damage to low rise building, and the effect of wind on structures. He is also the founder and director of the Wind and Hurricane Impact Laboratory - WHIRL.
